General Practicioners
GPs are the best starting point for someone seeking professional help. A good GP can:
make a diagnosis, check for any physical health problem or medication that may be contributing to the individual’s mental health condition, provide information and discuss available treatments, taking the individual’s preferences into account, work with an individual to draw up a Mental Health Treatment Plan so they can get a Medicare rebate for psychological treatment, provide support, brief counselling or, in some cases, more specialised talking therapy, prescribe medication, refer a person to a mental health specialist such as a psychologist or psychiatrist, provide information and support to family members, if agreed monitor an individual’s progress.

ALCOHOL AND DRUG SUPPORT

Adis 24/7 Alcohol and Drug Support (www.adis.health.qld.gov.au) Is a 24 hour, 7 day a week confidential counselling, information and referral service for people in Queensland with alcohol and other drug concerns, their loved ones and health professionals. Phone: 1800 177 833 (freecall)
Counselling Online (www.counsellingonline.org.au) is a service that provides text-based counselling to alcohol and other drug users, their family members, relatives and friends. It is provided by Turning Point, a substance use treatment centre. Available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, across Australia.
Hospital Alcohol and Drug Service (HADS), located at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) this service offers inpatient withdrawal or stabilisation for people with alcohol and other drug dependency, subject to an assessment for suitability. Assessments can be conducted at a local community Alcohol and Drug Service, with a GP or by presenting to the Department of Emergency Medicine at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital between 8.00am-7.00pm. Following an assessment, an appointment will be made with HADS to discuss appropriate treatments available or to be admitted for an inpatient stay at hospital. Admission to HADS requires an assessment to work out if this is the most appropriate treatment for an individual.

SUICIDE PREVENTION/RESPONSE

Suicide Callback Service – 1300 659 467 The Suicide Callback Service is a free nation-wide telephone support service available to support people at risk of suicide and their carers, and is well suited to people who are geographically or emotionally isolated. The service can support callers through structured 50 minute telephone counselling sessions, scheduled according to the caller’s needs. The Suicide Callback Service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
StandBy – Support After Suicide 1300 727 247 or www.standbysupport.com.au StandBy is a postvention service and supports individuals, workplaces and communities bereaved or impacted by suicide. In addition they deliver fully-funded training for First Responders, professionals and service providers as well as for the broader community. StandBy is an initiative funded by the Australian Government.
